This area is where smolts from the upper Lyon are counted, the appropriate equipment can be placed at this constriction of flow, and all migrating smolts can then be counted, unless of course there is a flood, in which case a high % of them will go straight over the top. Such a constriction can of course be used to count adult fish as well, or indeed, to catch them. There is a main fish counter at Stronuich as well, so there are good records of numbers of salmon reaching the upper stretches of the Lyon, going back over many years.Smolts leave the river for sea in the spring months, usually when there has been a rise in water levels.
