The obvious thing to say about alders is that they coppice, and a stretch can easily regrow more densely than it was before in 8-10 years. This will certainly happen if the area is fenced. Even without a fence, alder is not the most palatable tree in the world, and animals will avoid it in many siuations. Or simply not having animals in the field for 2-3 months during the summer would be enough to allow this to get away. Coppiced alder poles are however very uniform and straight, and if a market can be found for such products, then the coppiced material is actually very easy to handle.
