The stand of trees here has been thinned out to create a more attractive walk, with Sitka Spruce and a % of the birch removed to let in more light. Where extraction costs are prohibitive, small diameter material like this is sometimes felled to waste. Although it looks untidy, it will gradually disappear. Dead wood attracts insects, insects attract birds........ This material therefore has a useful role to play in the new ecosystem that has been created.
